WhatsApp now lets you hide your Last Seen status

Have you ever tried avoiding someone on WhatsApp? It’s not an easy feat. While everyone can easily just avoid opening a specific message, WhatsApp also shows users when someone was last online. It’s an easy way to bypass someone trying to ghost messages. However, regardless of whether it’s proper to ghost someone, it’s still a good thing to control who sees when you were last online. After a brief beta period, the messaging service is adding just that.

First introduced in a beta last April, WhatsApp is officially introducing more privacy controls to its app. The new additions will let users control who is able to see when they were last online, their profile pictures, and their statuses. The update is rolling out now.

Before this latest update, WhatsApp already offered a way to hide their profiles. However, the old way was more generalized, blocking information from everyone, no one, or just from non-contacts. The new way will tailor this further by adding a “My Contacts Except” option.

As a caveat, enabling the option for certain people will also block your ability to see when they were last online. Regardless, it’s a huge win for privacy. While the feature can innocuously block bad dates, it’s more important for preventing potentially harmful people from tracking you online.
