PH to house the world's largest solar farm

The group said the facility, which will be executed by its unit Terra Solar Philippines, will have a capacity of 2,500 to 3,500 megawatts (MW). It is also designed to have a battery energy storage system of 4,000 to 4,500 MW per hour.

Once operational, the massive solar farm will deliver 850 MW to offtaker Manila Electric Company (Meralco), bolstering the latter's renewable energy sourcing.

Guillaume Lucci, president and CEO of Prime Infra, said the development of such a facility will help the country address increasing demands in the market.

We, at Prime Infra, are delighted to move forward with Meralco on this record-breaking project that highlights solar power’s important contribution to strengthening the country’s energy security -- solar, which is normally looked at for peaking, is now being made available by Terra Solar to answer Meralco’s mid-merit requirement, thereby addressing both the need for additional capacity and compliance with RPS (renewable portfolio standards), Lucci said.

The executive said that the group is taking advantage of the "steep decline in installation costs" as well as the "improved battery energy storage system technology".

The company also noted the decision was driven by the fact that the Philippines has been seen as "one of the most aggressive governments in the ASEAN region in terms of promoting renewable energy."
