Android 14 is Upside Down Cake

Google is still working on Android 13. The next operating system will launch sometime this year. Though all eyes are on the unreleased update, it isn’t too early to watch for what’s coming next. Now, we’re starting off with one of the most important details going into a major Android update: what it’s called. As early as now, Android 14 has its official name: Upside Down Cake.

Well, partially official. Android has stopped giving its major updates their own name. The most recent slew of updates resorted to the simpler numbering system. Regardless, the system’s developers haven’t stopped calling them by quirky names. For example, Android 11 was Red Velvet Cake, Android 12 was Snow Cone, and Android 13 is Tiramisu.

Spotted by 9to5Google, Android posted some changes to the software’s code, including a definitive confirmation that Android 14 is internally codenamed Upside Down Cake.

It’s certainly an interesting name choice. Upside down cakes aren’t exactly popular desserts. However, since not a lot of desserts start with the letter U, the choice isn’t that surprising either. (We were hoping for Ube Roll, though.)

On the development side, practically nothing is known about the new features coming for the update. Google is expected to launch Android 13, codenamed Snow Cone, sometime this year. On the other hand, Android 14 is coming next year.
