New Witcher game announced by CD Projekt Red

The Witcher is one of the hottest fantasy franchises today. After a widely successful video game series, Netflix picked up the franchise and turned into a successful episodic series. Now, grabbing the ball back into their own court, CD Projekt Red has announced a new video game coming soon.

In a somewhat surprising move, the studio confirmed that development is underway for the next installment of the series. The game is reportedly “kicking off a new saga for the franchise.”

That said, it might feature an all-new protagonist. The previous game, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, concluded Geralt’s story, leaving the franchise open for another character. The more obvious conclusion is for Ciri to take over the reins of the series. However, it can realistically go in an entirely different direction.

The studio is quick to clarify that the upcoming game isn’t explicitly The Witcher 4. Since it’s still in early development, CD Projekt Red cannot share any details about characters, plot details, or release date yet. The only detail revealed is that the game will transition to Unreal Engine 5.

A less obvious hint is the graphic included in the announcement. Rather than a wolf medallion, the depicted medallion looks more feline. However, it’s not exactly the School of the Cat medallion from the series. It could also hint at the School of the Lynx included in the franchise’s lore.
