Galaxy Z Fold 4 will have a more durable screen, report says

Durability is a constant problem of foldable technology. Since the first Galaxy Fold, reviewers and critics have attacked the form factor for either breaking after too many folds or accumulating a lot of dust. Unfortunately, though Samsung has made significant strides to improve durability, problems have persisted, albeit at a lesser rate. Regardless, the company is also working to provide better materials going forward. According to a report, Samsung is looking to install a stronger ultra-thin glass panel for the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 4.

As reported by a source from South Korean blogging site Naver, supply chains have started to make new panels for the new foldable. More specifically, the source indicates an improvement over the previous generation. Apparently, the panel installed in the Galaxy Z Fold 3 was molded to accommodate the inclusion of the S Pen. The next iteration will focus on general hardness to improve durability.

Additionally, Samsung is gearing up for a differentiated marketing strategy for the new panel. It will potentially call the panel “Super UTG,” instead of just “UTG.”

As a constant sticking point for foldable phones, planning significant improvements for durability might solve some hesitations with making the form factor more mainstream. While companies have aggressively pushed for more foldable presence, consumers are generally more wary about the device because of rising prices and persisting problems. Time will tell whether the improved panel will solve these issues with the industry.

According to their launch windows, Samsung is expected to launch the new lineup of foldables, including the Galaxy Z Fold 4, sometime in the third quarter.
