Elden Ring will expand ‘beyond the realm of games’

Elden Ring has quickly turned into a fan favorite this year. Though the game got on a rocky start because of its difficulty, it has sold over 12 million copies worldwide since launching late in February. Naturally, FromSoftware is celebrating the milestone, thanking users for entering its sparse world. However, the studio’s celebratory statement also includes a significant hint about the future of the hit game.

Or should we say hit franchise? In a press release, FromSoftware asks fans to “look forward to more of Elden Ring as an IP (characters and other intellectual property) in hopes of expanding beyond the realm of games.”

The statement conclusively confirms that the game will expand to other industries beyond gaming. However, FromSoftware did not confirm or hint as to what other form the franchise will take.

Given the studio’s reputation, it’s possible that media adaptations are coming. FromSoftware is notorious for obscuring much of its plot elements behind mystery. Its games are masterclasses in environmental storytelling, prompting a dedicated array of fans into lore-finding.

A more subtle storytelling approach also paves the way for more content dedicated to a game’s world. FromSoftware’s Dark Souls series even has a comic series to add on to the lore.

Notably, Elden Ring’s world was co-crafted by renowned fantasy author George R. R. Martin. The studio does have the resources to create more content set in the Lands Between. Additionally, we wouldn’t say no to DLC or a sequel, either.
