Carl Pei’s Nothing is announcing its first smartphone by April

“Ecosystem” has always been Nothing’s catchword. When OnePlus alum Carl Pei founded Nothing, he promised an eventual ecosystem of devices operating seamlessly with one another. Given the founder’s proclivity for audio, we always wondered how a Pei-led ecosystem was going to look like. True enough, Nothing’s first product was a pair of wireless earbuds, potentially setting the stage for an audio-centric lineup. However, if a new report is to be believed, Carl Pei’s Nothing is taking a sweet detour to the world of smartphones.

According to TechCrunch, the fledgling tech company is officially working on its first smartphone. Pei reportedly held private meetings during MWC 2022 to show a prototype of the upcoming device. Even better, Nothing is apparently ready to unveil the phone sometime next month.

Late last year, Pei announced a partnership with Qualcomm. Though the inked deal never revealed its explicit purpose, it was clear that Nothing was getting ready to offer more than just earbuds.

Fast forward to February, Pei, Nothing, Snapdragon, and Android began teasing a collaboration on Twitter. The founder tweeted that he was “back on Android,” which Android and Snapdragon replied to with agreement. Similarly, Nothing’s official Twitter account teased that “March is going to be fun.”

So, what is Carl Pei’s Nothing planning for March or April? Smartphone or not, Pei’s company is set to deliver on a host of promises made during its founding.
