Huawei nova 9: Just as good as the P40 Pro?

We’ve unboxed the Huawei Nova 9 and took a look at its camera capabilities.

Today, we’re taking a closer look at Huawei’s latest and see how its photos stack with a P Series phone. Specifically, the Huawei P40 Pro.

Huawei says the nova 9 can go toe-to-toe with a P Series phone. And that’s what we’ll take a look at in this video.

Quick refresher before we proceed. Here are the camera specs of the Huawei nova 9:

  • 50MP f/1.9 ULTRA VISION
  • 2MP f/2.4 DEPTH, 2MP f/2.4 MACRO
  • 32MP f/2.0 Selfie

Like the P40 Pro, It uses an RYYB sensor instead of the usual RGGB found in most phones. RYYB has more light intake to capture more details in any lighting scenario.

The XD Fusion Engine then kicks in to further refine the images taken. It’s Huawei’s take on computational photography that optimizes for detail and quality so we always get the best possible image.

Camera Shootout

Let’s start with everyone’s favorite. Food!

Take a good look at both images. Which one do you gravitate to more?

Under natural light, it’s almost impossible to take a bad photo with both the nova 9 and the P40 Pro.

Taking a closer look at the nova 9 photo, you can see that it was able to retain plenty of detail while producing a color accurate, and still enticing image.

Looking at the image taken with the P40 Pro, there isn’t much of a difference with what a nova 9 produced. This is a win for Huawei as their claim proves to be true.

Now let’s take a look at our very own, very dashing Associate Creative Director. He’s also not averse to being called Dazzle Dove or Shining Star. We digress.

He already looks fabulous as is, but it helps that both the nova 9 and P40 Pro are able to capture his radiance.

And as we go through more sample images side-by-side.

You’ll notice that the nova 9 can indeed give you that P Series level of mobile photography experience!

That’s it for the photos. Naturally there’s more to this phone. Let’s take a quick look.

With short-form video gaining more popularity. Huawei made sure that its front-facing camera can meet this demand. The nova 9 has a 32MP front facing camera that’s capable of taking 4K video. And also has this really cool dual-video feature that will take your short form videos to the next level!

The Starry Blue variant looks great. If you have a chance to grab it, do so.

We’re not quite sure what material was used for its back, but it’s not smudgy and also feels premium and sturdy. On the right side of the device, you’ll find the volume rockers as well as the power button.

It’s pretty easy to grip and hold. The phone doesn’t feel slippery at all. One-handed use is great despite the 6.57-inch screen size.

Speaking of which, you’ll enjoy doing your usual social media things on this phone.  Who doesn’t enjoy a little mindless scrolling on Instagram, right?

If you’re the type who enjoys watching movies. You can do that here too. The display is great and the speakers are more than decent.

Perfect for watching some of your comfort films on Netflix.

With the Snapdragon 778G 4G, you should be able to breeze through most of what you do on your smartphone.

Whether that’s for work or for catching up with friends via chat.

All of these apps and more like them are on the App Gallery. There’s literally millions of apps there for you to explore. And with Petal Search baked right in, you can be sure that all your favorite apps — like the ones we mentioned earlier — will be available for you to use.

The 4300mAh battery should get you through the day. But in case it doesn’t, you have the Huawei SuperCharge that will top the phone up in a jiffy.

The Huawei nova 9 is as good as it gets when it comes to mobile photography but it also has all the bells and whistles you want AND need from a smartphone.
