Meta will continue using facial recognition

Meta hadn't ruled out using facial recognition and other biometric systems

In our previous report, Meta announced that it's shutting down the Face Recognition system on Facebook. Aside from that, it will delete more than a billion people's individual facial recognition templates.

The technology, which includes the controversial DeepFace algorithm, was used to identify people in uploaded photos for tagging purposes.

Meta explained that this movie is a part of its company-wide move to limit the use of facial recognition in its products. According to Facebook, they need to "weigh" the positive use cases for facial recognition versus growing societal concerns as regulators have yet to provide clear rules.

Now, Meta made a clarification that the commitment is not applicable to its metaverse products. The spokesperson for Meta Jason Grosse explained further,

We believe this technology has the potential to enable positive use cases in the future that maintain privacy, control, and transparency, and it's an approach we'll continue to explore as we consider how our future computing platforms and devices can best serve people's needs.

Allegedly, Meta will continue to utilize an array of biometric tools, including DeepFace technology, as it moves aggressively into the metaverse.

According to the report, Meta will continue to use a variety of biometric tools as it moves aggressively into the metaverse. The source said that Meta did not disclose yet what it's planning to do with DeepFace tech.

However, it promised to keep users updated regarding the upcoming changes. Grosse said that they will continue to be public about intended use, how people can have control over these systems and their personal data, and how they're living up to their responsible innovation framework.

To recall, Mark Zuckerberg said that they came up with Meta to bring all its apps and technologies under one new company brand. It will focus on bringing "metaverse" to life and help people connect, find communities, and grow businesses. This means that over time, its users won't need a Facebook account to use its other services.

What do you think?
