Apple sued in China for not including free charger in box

More than a year later, Apple’s controversial decision to remove the free chargers from its iPhone boxes still ripple throughout the industry. For one, other smartphone brands have started following suit. A good number of consumers are still unhappy with the new paradigm. In China, a group of students are suing Apple for not providing a free charger for their new iPhone 12 Pro Max.

Reported via Vice, one of the students purchased last year’s premium iPhone model. As expected, the box did not come with a free charger. However, according to the students’ case, the USB-C to Lightning cable from the box does not allow the student to charge using adapters available in the market today, supposedly going against Apple’s claims in their advertising.

Their case also hinges on a few other elements. One claims that other brands in the market offer customers a choice between a box with a charger and a charger-less one. Another claims that removing the free charger only serves as free advertisement for the new MagSafe system introduced last year.

Such charges aren’t new to Apple, though. Other consumers in other countries have levied similar charges against Apple in the past.

For their part, Apple has its own reasons for creating a slimmer box. The company’s biggest claim is that removing the charger contributes to Apple’s goal to go carbon neutral by 2030, further stating that everyone has additional chargers anyway.

Currently still unresolved, the Chinese students’ case asks Apple to give them a free charger for the new phone, to pay RMB 100 in fines for breaching contract, and to cover their legal fees.
