WhatsApp launches a View Once feature for disappearing DMs

Temporary messages and posts are the boon of social media. Sometimes, users just want to post something without the usual sense of permanence like that risqué party you might have gone to last weekend. However, amid the benefit of Stories and the short-lived Fleets, messaging apps are still struggling with implementing the feature. Finally, WhatsApp is plugging that hole with a new View Once feature.

Starting today, WhatsApp is rolling out the temporary messaging feature to users everywhere. When sending a photo or a video, users can click on the “1” button to enable the feature. Media sent under the feature can only be viewed once by the recipient. After which, the message is deleted forever.

Naturally, there are more apparent ways to use the feature. If you have a… photo that you don’t want others spreading around, the feature can prevent any mishap from occurring. Of course, any malicious party can still take a screenshot before it expires and spread the media around. Hence, the best word of advice for sending salacious media remains the same: Only do it with people you trust.

On the other hand, WhatsApp also says you can use the feature to share sensitive information like Wi-Fi passwords.

Outside of WhatsApp, a few other messaging apps have the same feature. Telegram, for example, has a self-destructing feature which terminates sent messages after a certain period of time. It’s a different take on the disappearing message but may end up more secure than WhatsApp’s View Once feature.
