Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘brutal’ music video uses animated masks made on iPad

Critically acclaimed singer-songwriter Olivia Rodrigo has just released the official music video for “brutal.” In the music video, Rodrigo navigates a dreamlike world, encountering various obstacles along the way.

Interestingly, Rodrigo wears a variety of animated masks throughout the video — which were all made on iPad using Apple Pencil and Procreate.

The music video was directed by artist Petra Collins. In a comment, Collins shared how integrating the masks into the video was the best part. “I think what most fun about this process was that we were able to bring the masks we were making on set and edit them in real-time. We could have our animators draw something and try it out on the spot,” said Collins.

iPad, Apple Pencil, and Procreate

Collins stated how she has always wanted to work with some type of integrative animation. And using the iPad and Procreate simultaneously were perfect since they fit right into the process.

“Procreate on iPad makes drawing and animating the perfect sensory experience, similar to how I feel shooting film. We shot this video on 16mm so it seemed natural to be using a process where our animators were able to draw stuff and try things out on set in real-time,” said Collins.

Indeed, the power of iPad, Apple Pencil, and Procreate combined were unrivaled when it comes to being creative. After all, the Apple Pencil sets the standard for how a drawing should feel — intuitive, precise, and magical.

This is inherently true, seeing how artists like Shyama Golden (and even GadgetMatch’s own collective of artists) blend traditional and digital art through the help of Apple Pencil and iPad.

Additionally, Procreate is undoubtedly one of the most powerful digital art apps available in the market. It’s perfect for creating sketches, paintings, illustrations, animations, and more. One of its unique features is FacePaint — a tool that lets you paint directly onto your face to create your own filters, masks, or make-up looks.

Learn more about how to use FacePaint via Procreate, and maybe make your own ‘brutal’ animated mask.
