Apple reportedly working on a 25W wired charger

Apple is reportedly boosting its wired charging capabilities to 25W for the iPhone 13 series. It’s a significant change, given the company’s current charging situation. Since the months leading up to the iPhone 12 series’ launch last year, Apple has controversially played around with how it approaches charging.

Since the iPhone 12 series, Apple stopped shipping free chargers with their new iPhones. The decision resulted in thinner boxes and more phones packed into a single shipment. In the same vein, the company also resurrected the MagSafe system for the iPhone to bring a wireless charging method for consumers. Though it offered Apple a new source of income, consumers were less than thrilled about having to buy a separate charger for their new iPhone.

According to the latest report from MyDrivers, Apple is leaning into that even further. Reportedly, the company’s upcoming supply chain includes a 25W charging capability. Currently, Apple’s main charger only goes up to 20W of wired charging. It retails for US$ 19.99. If the 25W charger is true, who knows how much Apple will sell the accessory for?

Additionally, the modest increase might not prove much in terms of charging capability, anyway. It is, hopefully, a step in the right direction, though. The company’s competitors are already ramping up the charging wars. Most notably, Samsung is reportedly gearing up for a 65W fast charger for next year’s Galaxy S22 series. Apple has a lot of ground to cover if it wants to catch up.
